Society of St Vincent de Paul

St John's St Vincent de Paul Group

The SVP at St John’s was established on 1st March 1965. Of the five founding members, some are still parishioners and one is still actively involved in our work. Throughout the years our numbers have increased to the current membership of seventeen who meet weekly. We have a thriving and active membership which is supported by the generosity of parishioners who give their time to support our activities with transport and the provision of refreshments.

Visiting and befriending...

The core work of the SVP is to visit and befriend people in need, providing practical and moral support through this one to one contact. During the past twelve months we have made in excess of five hundred visits to parishioners in their own homes and have additionally supported people attending hospital appointments, visited inpatients in hospital, helped relatives of people in hospital visit their loved ones by the provision of transport, and visited people living in Residential and Nursing homes. We also help several parishioners to attend Mass by the provision of transport when this is needed.

Key activities...

  • Twice yearly outings for our visitees
  • The delivery of food parcels for Parishioners in need.
  • The provision of financial support to individuals and families in need.
  • The annual sponsored walk raising monies to enable families in need to have a holiday or enjoy out of school activities.
  • The annual Memorial Mass for members of the Parish who have died within the past year.
  • The provision of funds to support oversees aid as needed.

Funding...

The S.V.P. is funded by the generous donations we receive from parishioners, weekly secret collections from Members at our meetings, and the Annual Maundy Thursday collection supported by Fr Michael.

Reaching out to those in need...

We are constantly striving to find ways in which to reach parishioners who might benefit from our friendship and support. If anyone knows of someone who might benefit from this, or if any Parishioner would like to find out more about our work or would like to join us please contact us below or get in touch with any of our members.
